Earn college credit and practical permaculture career skills with this 16 sessions introduction to permaculture college course. Learn how to transform your home, school and other public urban spaces into sustainable ecological oasis that harvest and conserve water and energy, produce food and medicine, regenerate biodiversity, educate and gather the community, and bring beauty and joy to life. Experience interactive lecture style presentations, hands-on design practice and some possible field trips to observe permaculture systems in action.
COURSE DETAILS:
This course provides the theory, philosophies, principles, techniques and practical aplications of permaculture design, the whole-system design approach for creating and managing sustainable human settlements and institutions.
The focus of the course will be on small and community scale permaculture systems for homes, school campuses, communities, farming operations and other urban public spaces.
Topics explored in this course will include: permaculture design ethics & principles, permaculture design elements & process, nature's paterns and systems, water harvesting & conservation systems, compost & soil fertility systems, plants & food production systems, energy & shelter systems, community & social systems and urban permaculture agricultaral systems.
During the course, participants will create a Basic Conceptual Permaculture Design for a possible permaculture demonstration farm and system on the Saddleback College campus.
Upon completion of the course, participants will recieve college credit towards receiving a Horticulture Certification or Associates Degree at Saddleback College.
DURATION:
16 sessions of 2 hours each (32 hours total)
INSTRUCTOR(S):
Lucian Toma - sustainability and permaculture designer, educator and consultant with over 7 years of professional experience in the design, development and implementation of regenerative programs in academic, government, business and nonprofit environments. Lucian was the Public Programs and Ecological Design Lead at The Ecology Center where he led 2 Permaculture Certification Courses in 2015 and 2016. In the past 3 years he has designed over 40 private and public permaculture spaces, installed over 20 and taught over 200 permaculture and sustainability related workshops.
