Humanity Chapter 1 - (Part 1) A necessary way forward: The Villages of Basic Earth & People Centered Skills
Humanity, the podcast, was launched today July 5th, 2022. It starts with Part 1 of a series that will reveal an idea I have explored for more than a decade: contributing to the creation of a life sustaining and regenerating world via a Network of Villages of Basic Earth & People Centered Skills. In this first episode I share with you why these spaces of permaculture, sustainability, and regenerative education are needed, and briefly how one specific model could look, feel like and function like.

Here is a written synopsis of this 1st podcast (I DO HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU LISTEN):
  • I assume that my audience is generally very similar to me: committed to learning and incorporating ways of being and practices that contribute to creating a better world
  • Beyond the things we do at the individual, family and community level, be it gardening, waste reduction, supporting those in need, activism of all kinds, to contribute to a better world, I invite you to  step into a higher level of being and purpose - to participate in and/or support one, multiple or the network of Villages of Basic Earth & People Centered Skills to transform the world with them.
  • Why? We are in the 11th hour where we can loose our grip on the regeneration that is possible or taking the big steps forward to create a resilient world. One does not have to dig too deep to learn about the degradation, desperation, pain and suffering that permeate the world, indeed one should explore that and honor the pain of that realization. We can choose to use our blessings to create a life sustaining and regenerating future for all.
  • I am inviting you to consider that a big answer to going in the right direction for a healthy, abundant, thriving, peaceful, beautiful future for all, including your self and your descendants is earth and people centered education: education that is filtered through the ethics of permaculture, sustainability, regeneration, ecology, sociocracy - education that is science and planetary indigenous wisdom based, education that is inspired by nature - education that is conducive to freedom, justice, ecological abundance, health, resilience, peace and thriving for all.
  • I am inviting you to consider that this education can be spread throughout the entire world via a network of Villages of Basic Earth & People Centered Skills. I invite you to envision them as centers of excellence in all communities around the world.
  • The two main village types are: the village built from scratch on a large tract of open land (something I am currently developing in one location) and the village developed in an existing community (something I have worked on before). The 1st is easier to create and grow and both will take many different shapes in the details of their operations, governance, and some of their sustaining approaches.
  • A basic model village would encompass the following elements:
    • "A fully functioning permaculture and regenerative farming operation, growing annual and perennial food, medicine, and other materials for basic human needs, while also healing and sustaining the native wild ecosystem - the production will feed the people that steward the land, visitors and the larger community through surplus sold, bartered or gifted in an open market on site and elsewhere locally (the diversity of production would include, market gardens, alley crop orchards, food forests, grazing animal systems for surplus protein and fiber, ponds with fish and other nutrients production, mushrooms, herbs, timber, fiber plants and other plants for making various village and market worthy products) - the operation is sustained by resources and materials found, produced and maintained on site - the people that manage all of its aspects live on site permanently or temporarily - we have plenty of examples how this could work, including among many, Richard Perkins’ Ridgedale Permaculture facility and his book “Regenerative Agriculture - A Practical Whole Systems Guide to Making Small Farms Work” - the details would be dictated by the local geography, climate, indegenous people history and other ecological and social contexts"
    • A fully functioning educational campus, teaching basic, intensive and long term skills to the local and larger community via classes, courses, gatherings, internships, apprenticeships and the likes, with some students living on campus even for a few years
    • It will also function as A fully functioning other micro-enterprises campus, including farm stands, garden & nursery center, restaurant, caffe, events spaces, local crafts shop, cabins, eco-hotel, childcare, yoga, healing therapies, art expressions, poetry nights, painting and sculpting as well as a space for offering other services in the community outside the farm, such as garden design, farm consulting, family counseling, permatecture, self improvement, leadership and the likes
    • It will be A space as a hub for promoting and supporting regenerative businesses in the community and providing time and skill banks as well as access to all forms of capital for regenerative businesses and communities to start up
    • Most importantly, this space would function as a training ground and support for replication - this will be the go to place locally or regionally to be inspired, empowered and supported at any scale. People will be able to find the right help here to regenerate their own lives, homes, families, gardens, schools, businesses, communities, private or public spaces
    • This will be A village of people that travel to or from here, including permanent and temporary residents, teachers, members, supporters, students, apprentices, volunteers, people in transition. All will steward this place
    • This space will abound with life, color, ecological and cultural diversity, people working the land, creating art, science and literature, celebrating life in all types of forms, united and working in tandem guided by earth and people centered ethics of life
    • This place will sustain its own operations and will share its surplus to support the creation of other spaces like it. In the midst of all of it, education will be the focus, for all ages and all stages of learning and understanding
  • I invite you to envision this space and join in the creation of these villages
  • To answer many of your questions: in the next part of this series I will share a strategy on how to get a first village and the network to happen.

Thank you for being part of this chapter of our common past and present stories and our possible common future. I would greatly appreciate reading feedback from you. It would be fantastic to hear if this content made you feel inspired, empowered and/or supported in your journey towards making a Life Sustaining and Regenerating Society happen. I’d love to hear if it did not and what I can improve to make that possible. If you really enjoyed this, I’d love to be able to make as much of this content possible on a regular basis and would love your financial support to make space for this creation in my life and yours. Any support, especially a monthly subscription would really help make that possible.
